The following few weeks passed by quickly. Things were going well for me. I loved my job with Ember, I was saving money, and, for the first time in a long time, I was happy. My relationship with Aaron continued to grow. We saw each other at least once during the week, and we spent our weekends together, starting with him picking me up from work on Friday afternoons.
One particular Friday afternoon, I was alone in the office, anxiously awaiting Aaronâs arrival. It was a holiday weekend, and Ember had offered to let me take the days off, but I opted to work so I could keep building up my savings account.
When I heard his footsteps coming down the hall, I shut down my computer and grabbed my purse from the bottom drawer of my desk. When I looked up, my eyes landed on the last person I ever expected to see standing in my office.
âRobert,â I gasped. âWhat are you doing here?â
He cleared his throat and fidgeted with the cuffs of his suit, seemingly nervous, which was completely out of character for his overconfident ass. âI need to speak with you. Is there somewhere we can talk?â
âWe can talk here. What is it?â I asked, utterly confused by his sudden appearance.
He glanced around my office before asking, âAre we alone?â
âWhy?â No way in hell was I going to tell him that we were indeed alone.
âBecause this is a conversation that needs to take place in private.â
âThis is as private as itâs going to get,â I huffed, irritated with having to look at his face.
He was silent for a few long moments before he floored me with his next words. âWeâre still married, and I want you to come home.â
âWhat?â I shrieked.
âApparently, our divorce papers were misplaced and never officially filed. Weâre still married, and I want you to come home and resume your place as my wife.â
âNo,â I stated firmly.
âI donât believe I asked you a question.â And the pompous ass I knew was back.
âYou didnât, but Iâm not going home with you. I have copies of the paperwork. Iâll be happy to refile it and have this little mishap taken care of.â
He sneered. âItâs not that simple, Macy. They wonât accept a copy. It has to be the original.â
âAre you saying we have to refile for divorce and go through the whole process again?â
âIf we wanted to be divorced, yes, thatâs what we would have to do. But, weâre not divorcing. Youâre coming home with me. Now stop dragging this out. Youâve had your fun and proved your point, but Iâm out of patience where youâre concerned.â As each sentenced left his mouth, he took a step closer to me, while I instinctively took a step back.
âYou need to leave,â I stated firmly, trying to hide my fear. He had never hurt me physically, but I had never outright denied any of his requests either.
He laughed sardonically. âLetting you come here,â he paused and shook his head. âClearly, I made a mistake.
